Charging cables

If your phone or laptop is charging slowly, the cable is the most likely culprit. More often than the charger, and far more often than the battery. Cables are the cheapest part of the chain and the one people replace last, usually with whatever was nearest the till.

They are not interchangeable. A USB-C cable rated for 60 W will physically fit a 100 W laptop charger and quietly deliver 60 W anyway. Anything carrying more than 60 W needs an e-marker chip inside the connector to negotiate the higher current, and a cable without one will simply hold you at the lower figure with no warning. The same goes for data. Many charging cables carry no meaningful data speed at all, which is fine until the day you try to move a video off your phone.

The 240 W cables are the newer USB Power Delivery 3.1 standard, and they are worth it if you are charging a demanding laptop or want a cable that will not be the limiting factor in three years. For a phone, 60 W is plenty. On length, shorter is faster, because resistance rises with distance and a two-metre cable gives up a little speed for the reach. We list the wattage rating and data speed on every cable, because “USB-C cable” on its own tells you almost nothing.
